Sketchbook // bird nest practice

Following along a conference recording of Jean Mackay (a conference about nature journaling).

I feel like it takes me an hour sometimes just to warm up enough to draw/to be in the headspace/less-self-space of drawing wholly. Maybe there’s some practice habits (self-training Pavlovian style?) I can give myself so I might enter that ready-loose-aware stage more quickly. John Muir Laws‘s experience with clicking his mechanical pencil & posture-with-notebook suggests there might be? (He relates this in a conversation with Florence Williams after her keynote address about wellness, time in nature, and awe.)

(Which was another fascinating video.)

Jean McKay has a really pretty guided sketchbook, called The Nature Explorer sketchbook.
