Coloring Zine 5 // Gone Birding

The fifth micro coloring book/zine thingy! I am on a roll. Or obsessed. Or something.

About birds, of course. I thought I had more mouse art than bird art, but it turns out that as far as inked/linework finished art goes, it’s birds. I was surprised! Are you?

An black and white zine is open on a wooden table. The small pages show two birds (a redstart and a chickadee, the latter holding a sign that says "Vote!"). A bottle of green ink is visible in the upper right and a paintbrush lies on the crease of the zine. A leaf and the word vote are tinted green. Artwork copyright © K. TalmageThis one had an American Redstart, three Black-capped Chickadees, a Winter Wren, a Raven, two Penguins and a Swan. There may be a crown and a fez. Just sayin’.

The linework varies because sometimes I was using micron pens and sometimes the ipad, and art starts off at different sizes, then gets scanned with less-varied specs, then gets cleaned up (removing all but the black, sort of, mostly), and anyway, all that probably doesn’t matter. Well, except the biggest drawings scanned at the highest res usually wind up having the thinnest linework in the zines, but I’m working on balancing that.

Why yes I am having fun!

About the Zines

Coloring zines began as patron rewards, but some are now available for purchase. You can become a patreon member (https://www.patreon.com/1490941/join), purchase through Patreon (most zines so far for one price; don’t use your iPhone for this, as Apple creates a surcharge); or visit my shop (the Etsy one , I still have to get the zines posted to the one on this site)

The How-to turn the downloaded-and-printed-page into a zine is below, again. A PDF version of this is available in the patron posts.

A mini coloring folded-paper zine stands on a wooden window sash. There is green foliage behind the white paper zine which shows a raven flying with a trail in the shape of a heart. A snowflake prism is visible in front of the zine. Artwork copyright © K. TalmageThe cover is the Mid-February Sky Dance, by the way.

Instructions

Do print FULL (not FIT to page), if you have that option. I fine good results on my old inkjet with color-better settings (not black/white-best) but test it on yours, of course.

Above is a photo of the steps (1-2-3). Some might like seeing a video showing the process for a blank: https://youtu.be/keX3nBEcw2Y?si=0gbG9ceJOGE7juEh

Written instructions are down below also.

0. Print on 24 or 20 pound paper. Lighter-weight paper would crease better but coloring might go through the page. Heavier paper will feel less like a mini book because the paper will be harder to fold, won’t be as flat in zine-form, and the paper edges will be kind of offset. Let me know what paper(s) you try!

1. Fold and unfold the paper to make creases that divide the paper into eighths.

2. Fold the paper in half along the short axis and cut halfway through across that fold, using the long axis crease as a guide. Example, after cutting and unfolding:

3. Now fold along the long axis and push/pull/fold “pages” in and out to make a little book:
